The state of being self employed and finding the right health coverage

Most of us so badly want to come away from the shadows of our employers, isn’t it? But as they say, it’s easier said than done. Even if a person does manage to get away from the clutches of a 9 to 5 job he has to find ways and means to support himself and his dependants. Perhaps that is why, millions all over the world, especially the United States, are going along with the self- employment option. But self- employment has its own hazards considering that the person in question is not entitled to enjoy any ‘extras’ that come along with the job. And mind you, this, to a large extent involves health insurance. It is no more a process where you signed on the dotted line and let your payments be made directly through your account. Since the crunch can get really tough, you need to understand your requirements well. Here’s what you need to do-

  • Know what your health requirements are all about - Looking for insurance and not knowing what you’d really need can be a deadly combination. In other words, it will land you nowhere. Start paying more attention to your health requirements. Decide on the coverage you need by answering these simple questions- Do you need to go to the doctor often? How much freedom would you like your plan to offer you? Are you ready to function within the confines of a given network Once you are able to find answers to these simple questions, your job will turn out to be a lot easier.
  • Scan through all possible options - This is something many self- employed people forget to do. When it comes to buying insurance, they grab hold of whatever they come across at the very first instance. That is an entirely wrong approach. You may not be quite conversant with the idea of self- employed health insurance but that definitely does not mean that you’re not going to look around. Like there are various options under individual or group health insurance, so are there under self- employed health insurance too. You’ll get several low deductible plans that are high on benefits and offer you as much assurance as does an employer sponsored group plan.
  • Check your eligibility under COBRA - This is the best possible thing to do when you’ve just started out on your own and thinking of buying insurance that’ll suit your situation. If you’ve enjoyed benefits under the group plan offered by your previous employer, in all probability you’re eligible to continue with the benefits even after you’ve left the job. But in order to get benefits under COBRA, you’ll need to act quickly, so much so, that you must give your employer a notification within 60 days from the time you leave the job. This will make sure that you and your family enjoys benefits of the previous plan for the next 18 months.
