Who sells long-term care insurance?

Most people choose to purchase long-term care insurance as an individual policy through an agent or broker. LTC insurance is a complicated subject and a major investment, so finding the right person to work with is important. Start by looking for independent agents in your area, and check with your state insurance department to make sure that they are properly licensed. You will also want to double-check that any agent you are considering has received additional training in long-term care insurance. You should also take note of how many companies a given agent is appointed with. Ideally, you will want to work with an agent who sells products from at least three different insurers. Most experienced and knowledgeable LTC insurance specialists are appointed with five or six.

You can also purchase a policy directly from an insurance company. While not as plentiful as they once were, there are still many insurers who offer such policies. Major companies offering traditional long term-care insurance policies today include Bankers Life & Casualty, Genworth Financial, MassMutual, Mutual of Omaha, New York Life, Northwestern Mutual Life, State Farm, and TransAmerica. Traditional LTC insurance is generally more affordable than hybrid and asset-based policies. However, such policies ensure that your money does not go to waste by turning any funds not used on LTC into a death benefit for your heirs. Companies offering such policies include Guardian Life Insurance, Lincoln National Life Insurance, Minnesota Life, Nationwide, Pacific Life Insurance, and State Life Insurance. Further information about the histories, policies, and reputations of these companies can be found in other articles on this site. Keep in mind that prices for nearly identical policies can vary wildly from one insurer to another, so take the time to do a bit of research and shop around.
