Will my spouse’s retiree health plan affect my ability to purchase a plan on the exchange?
Having a spouse who is eligible for or enrolled in a retiree health plan should not impact your ability to get coverage through the exchange. Of course, you will still need to pay attention to the rules and requirements of the exchange as they apply to yourself – for example, premium subsidies (also known as premium tax credits) are only available to those whose income is between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level. Unless loss of coverage or another significant event qualifies you for a special enrollment period, you will also have to wait until open enrollment (November 1st to December 15th in most states) to apply for coverage through the exchange.
