What kind of individual health insurance plan should I get?

There are four levels of individual health insurance plans: bronze, silver, gold, and platinum. While the type of plan you choose will not directly impact the quality or amount of care you receive, it will impact how much you pay for the plan itself and for any claims you make. Overall, a young, healthy person who does not expect to make many (if any) claims during the coming year will likely benefit most from a bronze-level plan. An average family probably wants to look at silver plans, and someone with a pre-existing condition or who is on prescription medication might do best with a gold- or even platinum-level plan. To learn more about calculating which level of plan is best for your situation, including how subsidies can play into such calculations, take a look at our article on finding the insurance plan that’s right for you.
