What are cost-sharing subsidies?

Cost-sharing subsidies, also known as cost-sharing reductions (CSRs), are government subsidies with two main functions. First, they help save you money when you use your coverage by reducing deductibles, copays, and coinsurance. Second, they reduce the maximum out-of-pocket level of your plan, which can save you even more if you end up requiring large amounts of care that year.

Anyone whose income does not exceed 250% of the poverty level is eligible to receive cost-sharing subsidies, and the subsidies will automatically be included so long as you purchase a silver-level plan. This last part is important, because silver is the only level at which you can have access to cost-sharing subsidies. This isn’t as limiting as it may appear, though – the addition of such subsidies can increase the actuarial value of a silver plan and bring it to a level where it is equivalent to or even better than a gold plan, but still at the price of a silver plan. Other metal levels may still be worth looking into depending on your situation, but for those who want to make the most of the subsidies available to them, a silver plan is the best bet.
