If I qualify for Medicaid, do I still need to worry about open enrollment?

Unlike individual plans or plans available through employers, enrollment for Medicaid is open year-round – there is no set period in which you are allowed to enroll. The same is true of the Children’s Health Insurance Program, CHIP.

However, this does not mean that you should ignore the open enrollment period entirely. Those whose income puts them near the Medicaid/subsidized plan cutoff, especially in states with expanded Medicaid programs, should still take the time to enroll in the exchange just to be sure of where they stand regarding Medicaid qualification. Because if you ignore the open enrollment period and then find out that your income is too high to qualify for Medicaid, you will likely be stuck without any coverage for the coming year. When you enroll in the exchange, you will automatically be directed towards plans appropriate for your income, making it easy to see whether or not you are qualified for Medicaid.

If you do qualify for Medicaid but then experience a change in income during the year that makes you eligible for a subsidized plan through the exchange, a special enrollment period will be triggered. This will allow you to enroll in such a plan even if open enrollment is not currently underway.
