If I got a new health insurance plan during a special enrollment period, when does my coverage renew?
All plans sold through the exchange provide coverage from January through December regardless of when you purchased them. So, even if you picked a new plan during a special enrollment period in the summer, your current plan is still only good through the end of December. Provided no significant changes are being made to your plan for the coming year, your coverage will likely automatically renew at the end of open enrollment (December 15th in most states). If you want to change your plan or make sure that everything renews properly, simply return to the exchange website you used to buy the coverage or call the exchange. Just remember that once the open enrollment period ends, your coverage will be locked in and you will need to wait until the end of the year to make changes or enroll in a new plan unless you qualify for another special enrollment period.
If I have or am eligible for coverage through COBRA, can I choose to buy an exchange plan instead?
