AK (Alaska) Health Insurance Resources

Like in all other places health insurance in Alaska too is broadly segregated into two types- individual health insurance and group health insurance. As the name suggests, individual health insurance is chosen primarily by individuals who are self employed or by persons who want to purchase insurance individually for family members. Group health insurance, on the other hand, is purchased by companies for its employees. Also, the payment laws for the two categories are different. In case of an individual insurance plan what you need to pay is an annual premium and a deductible. On the other side of the spectrum, if you choose a group policy youíll not only have to pay an annual premium and deductible but also smaller payments during the time you avail medical service.

Alaska, when it comes down to health insurance policies, behaves much the way other states do, that is, if youíre not found adequately eligible insurance companies can retain the right of turning you down a the very first instance. Before considering Alaska health insurance, you must remember that this state measures your eligibility for a health policy taking into account your present health condition. State laws have also given enough leverage to insurance providers considering the fact that the latter can fix the prices for different policies according to their own discretion. One piece of good news is that you can renew most insurance policies.

When individual health insurance programs are considered, the state of Alaska has several alternatives for its residents. Depending upon the amount of money you can dispose, the state has both private health insurance providers and also those at the Government level. If you are eligible as far as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act goes, the best source for individual health insurance is the Alaska Comprehensive Health Insurance Association (ACHIA). People who do not have the financial capacity to opt for private individual health insurance can go to the ACHIA stating their requirements.

As far as group health insurance goes, Alaska laws are similar to that of other states. For one, a provider cannot turn down a request for group health insurance just if someone from the group concerned contracts some illness. The provider cannot also make the unfair act of charging an extra fee. This law, more or less, is also applicable where small businesses are concerned. State laws have not given providers the choice to decide whether small businesses require group health insurance or not- the latter has to be given the facility of group health insurance. But larger applications may be denied if they do not fall within the spectrum of the insurance providerís set of policies. Large applications may not also be at an advantage as far as rate hikes go (unlike small applications that face lesser rate hikes tanks to state laws.
