You may continue with the health cover provided by your employer for 18 months under COBRA rules. You have to pay the rest of the premiums. But even then, your costs will be considerably lower than if you were taking up individual cover. You are eligible for COBRA cover under the following situations.

  • You become unemployed or self employed for 18 months after leaving a company.
  • You are a widow or a child of a person who has died after serving the company for three years or more.
  • You are a divorced partner or child of an employee who has left the concern after 3 years of service.
  • You are a child of the employee. You are less than 23 years of age.
