WellPoint and Dell Redefine Business' Approach to Environmental Leadership
WellPoint, Inc. (NYSE: WLP) announced in September that it is collaborating with Dell to redefine the way businesses approach environmental leadership with the "Plant a Forest for Me" initiative. This new program allows organizations worldwide to facilitate the planting of millions of trees in sustainable managed reforestation projects to offset a portion of their overall carbon footprint.
Mark Boxer, president and chief executive officer, Operations, Technology and Government Services Business Unit of WellPoint, Inc. said, "We are committed to the continued growth of our company in environmentally sensitive ways. This includes minimizing our environmental impact through smart business practices and partnerships to advance green strategies, such as the 'Plant a Forest for Me' initiative. We look forward to working with Dell to implement a flagship environmental stewardship program that will attract businesses from around the world."
Todd Arbogast, director of Sustainable Business at Dell Inc "Protecting our climate is one of the most important and difficult challenges we face today. We commend WellPoint for playing a vital role in building a worldwide community of partners dedicated to a cleaner environment. Our shared earth deserves no less."
The "Plant a Forest for Me" partnership is the latest of WellPoint's environmentally responsible initiatives. As a company, WellPoint: reprocesses 55 percent of the waste it produces every year; makes use of online applications and forms for a majority of its member, provider and employee communications; and carefully discards its electronic assets in a way that minimizes their impact on the environment.
Dell launched "Plant a Tree for Me" in January 2007 to provide consumers the opportunity to offset the CO2 emissions related to the use of their computer equipment. The company collaborates with The Conservation Fund and Carbonfund.org, non-profit organizations that plant trees in sustainable managed reforestation projects.
Beginning today, any organization can collaborate with Dell and WellPoint in "Plant a Forest for Me." Other founding partners comprise ABN AMRO, Ask.com and Salesforce.com.
