Michigan Health Insurance

Health insurance comes in two broad categories at present: individual and group. Those who opt for individual insurance are mainly self-employed, or are employed by a company that does not offer a health plan, or who have a family and who want individual insurance for their family members. When you buy an individual plan, you are required to pay an annual premium as well as a deductible for each insured dependent, up to a base amount. If you buy a group policy instead, you have to pay an annual premium, co-payments payable at each medical service, and a deductible payable before insurance begins paying for your valid medical bills.

The rules governing individual health insurance in Michigan are somewhat different from other states. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan has no right to reject any applications for individual health policies. However, the other insurance companies can reject an applicant because of health problems. Blue Cross Blue Shield is also not allowed to impose exclusion periods if you are HIPAA eligible. The rules differ for others who are not HIPAA eligible. While HMOs and Blue Cross Blue Shield may apply an exclusion period of a maximum of six months, all other insurers may impose a maximum one year exclusion period on pre-existing conditions. All insurers may review your medical records for the prior 6 months before accepting your individual coverage. In Michigan, pregnancy can be considered a pre-existing condition in the case of individual policies. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan cannot vary their premiums based on community rating, but other insurance companies can. Your individual insurance cannot be cancelled if you fall sick.

In Michigan, you cannot be denied group health insurance or charged more due to a health problem provided you are eligible for it. If you change job, your new employer can wait to offer health coverage. In case you have a pre-existing condition, a new insurer can review your medical records for the last six months only and apply an exclusion of that condition from coverage for periods depending on the type of your plan. If you have had unbroken coverage of your pre-existing condition for over 63 days, you qualify for creditable coverage.

Small businesses employing two to 50 people in Michigan cannot be denied small group health insurance, nor can it be cancelled because of illness within their employee groups. Except through Blue Cross Blue Shield, your premiums can go up due to illness in your group. Self-employed people can buy small group coverage through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, but proof of the existence of sole proprietorship is essential. In three counties of Michigan (McComb, Oakland, Wayne), a small business with one to 99 employees can purchase group health insurance through a purchasing pool or alliance. For details, you can contact the Michigan Office of Financial and Insurance Services.

There are several programs in Michigan, such as Medicaid, MIChild, Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program that loof after the medical needs of people with low to moderate incomes.
Choosing the right quotes is difficult, so you should do a proper research making a final decision. However, it is always better to appoint professional health insurance agents and brokers who can be of great help in this regard with their valuable experience and expertise.

The leading health insurance providers in Michigan are American Medical Security, Assurant Health (formerly Fortis), Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Celtic, Fairmont Specialty Group, Golden Rule, Humana, Security Life and UNICARE.
