Blue Cross Blue Shield of
Michigan
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is a nonprofit corporation and
independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.
Founded in 1941, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM) at present
looks after the health insurance needs of almost half the number
of Michigan residents. The number of its members is now about to
reach 5 million. The company has participated in a big way in the
nationwide effort to reduce the cost of prescription drugs though
the increased use of generic pharmaceuticals. Blue Cross Blue Shield
Michigan's revenues in 2002 increased to $7.4 billion from $7 billion
in 2001. Its net income also rose to $161 million in 2002 from $56
million in 2001. The company received a rating of A- from A M Best,
an independent insurance analyst.
BCBSM offers its members access to a wide range of health plans
and programs that includes the alternative wellness program, Naturally
Blue. The company’s insurance plans include traditional
indemnity, Blue Preferred PPO, and Blue Care Network HMO. Blue Cross
Blue Shield Michigan also gives members dental, vision, and Medicare
supplement coverage, as well as workers' compensation insurance,
health assessment and health care management services. Its for-profit
subsidiary, PPOM, offers private health care management services.
PPOM has now taken over SelectCare, one of the biggest hospital-owned
health plans in southeast Michigan.
Among the individual and family plans offered by BCBSM are:
Individual Care Blue PPO: It takes care of basic hospitalization
and emergency care at a 70% co-insurance rate. Although the plan
does not cover prenatal care for pregnant women, it covers delivery.
Prescription drugs are paid at 50%. Individual Care Blue PPO offers
you the peace of mind that comes with the knowledge that you should
not worry about the unexpected, including: physician and hospital
coverage with no deductible and affordable co-payments, prescription
coverage with $2,500 maximum annual benefit and choice of providers
from BCBSM’s statewide networks (in Michigan,
100 percent of hospitals, 95 percent of physicians and 98 percent
of pharmacies participate).
Blue Cross Traditional: With five deductible choices as well as
Value Blue and Young adult Blue (for adults 19-25), this health
plan offers high flexibility and it covers hospitalization and emergency
treatment.
Blue Preferred PPO: You can avail of in-patient and outpatient hospital
care, as well as surgical and emergency service with this plan.
The plan not only offers the same basic services as the traditional
plan, it provides you the added benefit of physician choice as well.
Flexible Blue HSA: This is a high-deductible health plan that complements
a Health Savings Account. Although it works like a PPO, it lays
emphasis on preventive services.
In addition to the above, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan also
offers a Medicare supplement plan to its members who have crossed
the age of 65. The company’s BlueHealth Connection
program greatly helps its members to maintain their health by providing
them information and support.
