Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey

Located in New Jersey, the Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey has had one main objective over the years it has provided health insurance in the state- to offer health coverage to maximum number of people by keeping the rates affordable and manageable. With its headquarters in Newark, the organization is now the largest health insurance company in the state. Also it is the only insurance company that is licensed to offer health coverage under the Blue Cross and Blue Shield brands in keeping with its independent licensee status with the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. Today more than 3.3 million people are policyholders with the Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey.

The organization started off as two separate plans. The Blue Cross flank was initially known as the Associated Hospitals of Essex County, Inc which started operating in 1933. The main function of this body would be to provide coverage for a period ranging over 21 hospital days in form of a prepaid plan. Three years after it was established, the Associated Hospitals of Essex County, Inc took on the name Hospital Service Plan of New Jersey. By this time, though, most people referred to it as the Blue Cross of New Jersey. On the other hand, the Blue Shield of New Jersey began only in 1942 and continued to function separately until 1986, when the Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans merged and formed the Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey.

The organization has several plan offerings for individuals, families, employee groups, Government employees and also for Medicare beneficiaries. Individual plans include Horizon Basic Plan A/50, Horizon Traditional Plans B, C and D, Horizon HMO, Horizon MSA, Horizon Basic EPO and EPO Plus and Horizon Essential EPO and EPO Plus. Most of these plans offer an advantage in way of a range of deductibles except the Horizon MSA plans that demand high deductibles. Families, too, can avail the same range of plans except for the Horizon Basic EPO and EPO Plus and Horizon Basic EPO and EPO Plus.

Plans for employee groups are made available taking into consideration employee strength. On one hand there is a range of plans meant strictly for companies with 2 to 50 employees and on the other there is a range that is tailor-made for organizations with over 51 employees. In the first category, one can find the Horizon My HSA plan and Horizon BCBSNJ Plans A, B, C,D and E amongst several others. The Horizon My HSA plan is available both as a PPO plan and a direct access plan.

For companies with more than 51 employees, the Horizon PPO, POS, HMO, Direct Access and Traditional plans are available. Apart from these there is also a range of comprehensive high deductible plans.

Individuals above the age of 65 have access to Medigap plans, advantage plans and the Medicare Part D Rx plan. Beneficiaries can also avail the advantages of a special needs plan that is essentially an HMO offering prescription drug benefits.

Persons working with the Federal Government can enroll for the Federal Employee Program. Federal employees enjoying the advantages of the State Benefits Plan can also apply for coverage.
