Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan

If you are a resident of the state of Michigan you will not need to go far for health insurance. The Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan has a variety of plans that you can choose from. Ever since the organization came into being, its main focus has always been on the creation and innovation of cost- effective health insurance. The Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan believes everyone has the right to avail the benefits of affordable and qualitatively superior health coverage. This has been the driving force behind the organization’s initiatives for the last 70 years.

The history of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan goes back to 1929 when Baylor University Hospital conceptualized medical services that would be based on prepayment. And since then there has been no looking back. In 1942, the Michigan Hospital Service started using the Blue Cross symbol officially. For the next 33 years the Blue Cross and Blue Shield brands continued to function separately in the state. It was in 1975 that the two came together and formed what is now known as the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. Today the organization is a part of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, a 39 plan extensive network.

The Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, like most other independent licensees under the BCBSA, offer plans in four main categories comprising individual and family plans, group or employer provided plans, Medicare plans and dental plans. Only if a person does not get health coverage from his employer, can he apply for an individual health insurance policy.

Individuals can choose from the Individual Care Blue, Flexible Blue and Value Blue amongst others. The Individual Care Blue has been devised for people who want their money’s worth. The plan covers prescription drugs, preventive care services and office visits without charging any deductible. The Flexible Blue plan is structured to combine a medical plan and a Health Savings Account (HSA) in a single bundle. It covers office visits and preventive care services besides providing for prescription drug benefits. Since most plans charge exorbitant co- payments, people are on the lookout for a more affordable alternative. And that is exactly what the Value Blue plan is all about. On this plan the co- payments reasonable and members get good discounts on prescription drugs too.

Group plans, like in other Blue Cross Blue Shield branded companies, are based upon the number of employees working with the employer in question. Plans are available for both small, medium- sized and large businesses. In the Medicare plans category, BCBSM offers two plans, namely Medicare Plus Blue and Prescription Blue. The Medicare Plus Blue plan covers preventive care, outpatient services, ambulance services and even chiropractic benefits. The best aspect about this plan is that members are able to retain their private doctor. With the Prescription Blue plan, people can hope to save considerably on out- of- pocket costs relating to prescription drugs.
