Many innovations are being done by Blue Cross and Blue Shield as to implementing newer health management systems. These systems are being run in association with programs for chronic healthcare management as well as programs for disease prevention along with wellness. All of these has come as Blue Cross and Blue Shield strategies to improve America's health and have been proven to be successful in lowering the consumer as well as employer's cost and delivering better outcomes and thus directly corroborating reform in healthcare providing system.
In a recent media briefing, it has been shown how Blue Cross and Blue Shield strategies to improve America's health are different from public sector. In this briefing, Scott P. Serota, who is the president and CEO of Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, described as opposed to policymakers who are working on developing comprehensive healthcare reform legislation, the CEO of different Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies situated in Kansas City, Michigan, and New Jersey have demonstrated how delivery system is being transformed by their healthcare plan, which cannot be incorporated by the public sector.
Among private sectors players dedicated to innovation for healthcare systems, Blue Cross and Blue Shield is running in the forefront, added Serota. He did not conceal his pleasure working with the Congress as well as administration so that a comprehensive reform can be implemented. He says that there are different options available which can be found only in private sector players, and not to be found in government run health care management system. He says that to incorporate best healthcare management system, they are working on provider incentive as well as with the employers to find out benefit plans which will be supposed to be custom designed as opposed to single plans to cater many without main objective of providing healthcare being looked on. Being under tremendous pressure by different political parties, the policies run by the government are not able to incorporate these improvements.
As part of Blue Cross and Blue Shield strategies to improve America's health, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City made a new approach. In a health awareness program known as “A Healthier You”, 200 plus large employers consisting of a total 120,000 employees are included. The program is meant to encourage to adopt a healthy lifestyle that will ultimately result in reducing medical costs and at the same time increase in productivity from the employee part. The rate of visit to the emergency room by the participating companies and nonparticipating companies has been analyzed. It has been found the ER visit has been reduced in case of participating companies while in case of nonparticipating companies, there has been an increase of almost 17%. It is also noted that overall growth rate of medical costs is much slower for the participating companies.
According to Tom Bowser, CEO and BCBS of Kansas City, lifestyle behavior accounts for about 70 percent of healthcare expenditure nationwide. He added that the increased accountability from the member part in regards to lifestyle choices and disease prevention will result in healthcare expenditure containment in the future.
