Anthem Blue Cross and Blue
Shield of Virginia
Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield is a big managed care provider that
carries a Blue Cross Blue Shield license in nine states –
Connecticut, Indiana, Maine, Nevada, Ohio, Virginia, Kentucky, New
Hampshire and Colorado. They are part of the Wellpoint family of
health care providers, a large health conglomerate that provides
coverage to about 28 million people in the United States. As part
of their merger in 2004, Anthem actually changed their name to Wellpoint
Inc. However, their Blue Cross Blue Shield affiliate operations
still use the Anthem name, and so does the corporate web site. Anthem
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Virginia tries to provide quality, comprehensive
health coverage at an affordable rate to residents of Virginia.
Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield of Virginia offers a variety of health
plans that include:
Basic BlueCare: This plan offers individuals and families fee for
service options. Deductibles depend on coinsurance payments. You
can choose between paying 0% coinsurance or 20% coinsurance after
your deductible has been met. Members have the option of adding
riders to their plans in order to cover dental, maternity, and supplemental
accident insurance.
Individual Basic KeyCare: This plan enables individual and families
to enjoy Preferred Provider Organization, or PPO, benefits. With
a PPO plan, members enjoy the freedom to choose any doctor or health
care provider in the Organization while paying lower premiums than
fee for service plans. Basic KeyCare members have three plans to
choose from. You can choose from plans where you need not pay any
coinsurance after meeting your deductible, you will have to pay
20% after meeting your deductible, or you will have to pay 30% after
meeting your deductible.
Individual KeyCare Preferred: It is a cost savings PPO where members
can add riders to increase their health care insurance coverage.
Individual Essential KeyCare: This plan offers you two choices,
a 30% coinsurance option after meeting deductibles where members
choose from PPO providers and a 40% coinsurance option after meeting
deductibles where members are free to opt for any health care provider.
Individual KeyCare HAS: Members of this plan have high deductibles
with lower premiums while paying their medical bills from a Health
Savings Account containing member contributions of pre-tax dollars.
This account earns interest that is also tax deferred.
Individual KeyCare HealthSmartSM: This is an affordable high deductible
health plan, with deductible options compatible with a Health Savings
Account. This plan offers benefits that support routine wellness
care. Unlimited routine wellness doctor visits and routine screenings
and other services are covered before the policy deductible.
Individual KeyCare HealthSmart with Enhanced Drug BenefitSM: This
plan offers affordable health coverage with prescription drugs and
routine wellness services covered before deductible. This is, however,
not compatible with a Health Savings Account.
The company has also developed Short Option for those Virginians,
who need health care protection for just a short period of time.
This plan offers benefits similar to those available through its
traditional major medical programs, but is designed especially for
those in need of temporary protection. Its Individual Dental Plan
requires no health underwriting, which means there are no medical
questions to answer.
